154 - When people don't trust your directions

Tomorrow, I graduate from high school. I will shake hands with the headmistress and will finally, officially, be out of secondary education forever. It's an exciting feeling going into tomorrow's graduation ceremony. Our parents, and our teachers, will all be sitting in the audience, feeling proud of us. My mom will be there, and so will three of my aunts. It's a happy occasion.

Tonight at dinner, they were asking me how to get to my school. I told them they could catch a cab from this location, or they could take a bus from that place. And then - they didn't believe me. They thought that that road would be busy during the evening rush hour. They told me that the bus doesn't go the right way. They said they had another means of getting there in mind. They asked me if I was sure those were the fastest routes.

Uh, of course I'm sure. I've been going to that school for four years. I've gone up that hill over a thousand times. If you want to go the long way, the more expensive way, the busier way, fine. I just don't understand why you asked me for directions in the first place, honestly, if you had already planned on going your way.

Congrats!

I've been through this whole giving directions thing, too. Most of the time they don't believe me because deep down they think I get lost all the time. Yeah, I spend my time running around in circles wondering where the hell I am.

I hate this! My Colorado brother called me, while driving around, to ask where a restarant was located. My directions took him right to it. He called several times, yelling at me that he couldn't find it. I finally told him to call another brother if he didn't like my (a girl's) directions. He yelled, "I will!"

Minutes later, he called back to apologize because he realized that he was on the wrong street. Idiot.

First (and foremost) congratulations on your graduation! Now, forget about school and gathering knowledge for the purposes of being tested on it. Plenty of time for that in the Fall.

Second, you have touched on a major pet peeve of mine. Throughout my career (I cringe when I call it that, by the way), I have had people ask me for advice or explanations and then say, "No, I don't think so. I think it's..."

I will not repeat what my usual response to that is.

Thank you everybody for your congratulations. I haven't really spent every minute in high school trying my best, but I have tried pretty hard at times, and I really appreciate all of your comments, now that I'm officially graduating.

Marcy: Oh, I guess they're a bit wise then. I have a very good sense of direction even if I have no idea where I'm heading. It's just natural for me, so I never have that problem.

J.J.: Don't ask the question, if you can't take the answer.

vaishu: It is, it is...

King of NYH: I'm hearing 'em!

Newbie Mommy: Thanks B.

DPhatsez: I'm flying!

Douglas: I've actually been reading a lot so far, gathering knowledge I want to gather. It's my kind of leisure.

Shanne: College?! Wow.
