33 - The length of my...

...space bar! (What were you thinking?)

Does the space bar on the keyboard have to be a mile long? It's name says it all. It's a 'bar', people, and not a 'key'. On my keyboard, the space bar is the size of C, V, B, N and M combined. What's even crazier is that it gives us space. That's nothing. The space bar doesn't even create anything but nothing. It's long and domineering, but it essentially doesn't give us a character. Instead, it gives us emptiness, a digital vacuum, 'space' on the screen. Observe:

[ ] <--- See? ...Nothing.

Couldn't the space bar just have been a regular-sized button like the rest of them? I mean, assuming that our fingers are in place, our thumbs are more or less in the center, right? It's not like I'll suddenly think to myself one day:
Oh, I feel like going on a whim today. I'm feeling frivolous! Perhaps instead of using my thumb to press the CENTER of the keyboard, I shall venture to the very extremities of the space bar and apply pressure to, let's say, the LEFT end of it. Oh, boy, I'm living on the edge now!

Really, why does it need to be so long? It just needs to be a small, square key. At least 'Shift' and 'Enter' and perhaps some others have more reason to be bigger, but why this space... bar, this bar of space, oh, it infuriates me!

oh right. No parents save up here or in the UK, because we just all have student loans for life to pay for it basically. Which makes it hard for us to go overseas.

that spacebar is weiiird.

I see. I have a couple of friends in the UK. It's actually expensive for me to go anywhere else for university other than stay here in Hong Kong. Student loans are always beneficial if you're a citizen.

The spacebar is also the only key on my keyboard that isn't labeled with anything at all, this perturbs me.

Hi,Michael.
Looks like the spacebar is the key that you end up touching most frequently while you write something. I guess that's one of the reasons why it is so long.
It may creat nothing but that would not be the very EMPTY. It could be the basis of everything, I would say. So, SPACE can be the space, everything may come from there.

Anyway, thank you for sharing, and following.

Having a long space bar is essential, as it is the only key that is used from various positions on the keyboard as you fingers roam over the other keys, also it is necessary to have the space for both thumbs, as it is the only key that is used by two digits, if one is typing correctly (which I don't, btw)all this acoording to Hoyle and a small thing called an emingli...

So one shouldn't be ashamed of the size of his....

Hey, thanks for the advertising ideas Michael! :) I've been commenting all over the place the past few days. I'm finding it weird that some of my friends have been complaining that they can't get people to post on their blogs- but I really do think they've not been trying.
Do you have any other blogs to recommend?

it is essential Michael, since it is the key "most used" when typing.

thumbsUpsmile,

Extremely good point. I love it. It perturbs me too.

Chourou,

The basis of everything? But it gives us nothing! How paradoxical...

Michael said...

AV,

Really? Your fingers 'roam' around in various positions? ...My hands are in the same position more or less all the time.

Michael said...

J.J.,

As I said to AV, my thumbs are always in the center of the keyboard. At the most, it should be two keys big, but not five.

Michael said...

Chiara,

I'll think about it for a bit and get back to you on your blog.

My hands don't roam that much, they're always at the end of my arms.
